Wawa Supports the Summer Games Journey

Special Olympics Virginia becomes a recipient of a generous Wawa donation to help send athletes to Summer Games

Special Olympics Virginia is honored to be one of several organizations to receive donated Wawa Gift Cards, which will support travel costs to the program's largest event, Summer Games in June.

In honor of Wawa’s 58th Anniversary in the convenience retail industry, Wawa launched the “Gift Cards for Care” initiative with a total donation of $1 million in the form of gift cards to eight organizations including The Wawa Foundations’ seven National Partners: American Red Cross, Check Out Hunger, Children’s Miracle Network, JDRF, LLS, Special Olympics and the USO, plus community partner, Meals on Wheels.

“We’re thrilled to receive the generous gift card donation from our longstanding partners at Wawa to provide hunger, fuel and resource relief to our constituents,” said Rick Jeffrey. “During these times of uncertainty, it’s comforting to know our organization and the people we serve can count on Wawa to brighten our days and provide basic necessities at a time that it’s needed most.

"These gift cards will cover travel costs for our Area programs to attend Summer Games, June 10-11 in Richmond. We are extremely excited to have Summer Games back on the calendar after two years without, to include our Healthy Athletes program, which provides annual health screenings to many athletes who typically receive sub-standard care, or no care at all. Wawa's support will help us return to play after two challenging years of limited and virtual activity - and our athletes are ready for it, as are we!"

Organization staff and volunteers attended the Wawa Day Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, April 14, 9am – 10am at Wawa Store #8648 at 3100 N. Arthur Ashe Boulevard to share how the funds will impact the local community.
