On July 22, Special Olympics athletes had the chance to take the court alongside tennis professionals and legends during the WTA Unified Tennis Experience at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. Hosted by the WTA Foundation, the clinic offered a hands-on tennis experience that highlighted collaboration and accessibility in sport.
The event featured 20 Special Olympics athletes from the Mid-Atlantic region, including athletes from Special Olympics DC, Special Olympics Maryland, and three representing Special Olympics Virginia. Athletes participated in a series of drills and games with tennis standouts like Emma Navarro, Vania King, Brad Gilbert, and Clervie Ngounoue. The experience offered meaningful interaction and shared moments between athletes and tennis professionals.
The WTA Foundation, established by the Women's Tennis Association, is committed to empowering individuals and expanding access to tennis through community-focused programs. Events like the Unified Tennis Experience provide visibility for athletes with intellectual disabilities while helping to make the sport more approachable and inclusive.
Special Olympics Virginia is proud to be part of opportunities like this—ones that bring athletes into high-profile spaces, build confidence, and foster genuine connection through shared play.
We extend our thanks to the WTA Foundation, Mubadala Citi DC Open, and all who helped make this experience possible.
