Congratulations to Special Olympics Virginia’s own Kim D’Errico, who was named the 2021 Virginia CFO of the Year by Virginia Business in June! Kim, Vice President of Finance and Administration, took home the award in the small nonprofit category during a recent virtual celebration.

“Kim has been an outstanding VP Finance and Administration (CFO) and colleague for more than 20 years,” said Rick Jeffrey, Special Olympics Virginia President. “In a very mission oriented organization, Kim has a very specific set of skills, but the way she is able to use those skills to strengthen and move the organization forward in its mission is extraordinary. This makes her not only a first rate CFO but also a first rate servant leader, which in our line of work, may be the more valuable trait.”

During her nearly 21 years with Special Olympics Virginia, Kim’s commitment to uncompromising excellence has contributed tremendously to the financial health, growth and overall forward movement of the organization — across all departments. Highlights include her leadership in the increase of our reserve fund from $600K to $4MM; her creation and supervision of the growth of our endowment, currently valued at $1.6MM; and her pivotal role in two decades of unqualified audits.

Kim’s unwavering diligence also includes being the driving force behind beneficial changes in the areas of centralized accounting, donor data management and integration, human relations, property rebranding/remodeling, and practices surrounding our fundraising event accounting. As a Senior Manager, Kim leads with the perfect combination of financial acumen, service leadership, visionary growth and collaborative mindset.

In addition, Kim was tireless in her efforts to steer Special Olympics Virginia through the last year in a particularly uncertain financial climate. She was quick to think of possible obstacles we might encounter with the pause of our programmatic and fundraising activity. She led the effort to secure two PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) loans, with full forgiveness of our first loan and full forgiveness of the second loan anticipated.

Kim is an enthusiastic lifelong learner, always curious about the best next steps and how to more effectively take them – all the while parenting three young children, chairing various boards, volunteering, and giving back to her community in so many ways. Thank you and congratulations, Kim!
