Meet Our Champions: The 2024 Special Olympics Virginia Award Winners!

Honoring extraordinary athletes, coaches, volunteers, and community leaders who embody the spirit of inclusion and excellence.

Last Friday night, at the electric Opening Ceremony of the 2025 Summer Games, we proudly honored our incredible community of athletes, volunteers, coaches, and supporters. Meet this year's outstanding award winners who make Special Olympics Virginia extraordinary:

Jesus Godinez – Athlete of the Year

From swimming and golf to basketball and flag football, Jesus Godinez has been an active competitor for 18 years. He's proudly represented the state at national events in locations like Arizona, Florida, and Wichita, Kansas—where he recently earned a gold medal. Known for his tireless energy and leadership, Jesus is a standout competitor and dedicated teammate.

Sherry York – Area Volunteer of the Year

Sherry York, from Area 2 Chesapeake, has been a driving force behind local Special Olympics success. She ensures athletes make it to practices and is always their most enthusiastic supporter at competitions. Her leadership has notably contributed to Chesapeake athletes receiving Athlete of the Year honors two consecutive years.

Madeleine Barrera – Outstanding Coach of the Year

Maddie Barrera, from Area 2, is highly respected by both athletes and parents and has built a reputation for creating inclusive, enjoyable, and growth-oriented practices. With a coaching style developed during her college years and refined through continuous commitment, Maddie emphasizes respect, encouragement, and fun in every session.

Travis and Taryn Rickman – Chapter Volunteers of the Year

Travis and Taryn Rickman, affectionately known as our “Volunteer Power Couple,” have consistently demonstrated dedication and enthusiasm at Special Olympics Virginia events. Their involvement spans fundraising, event support, and consistently providing athletes with encouragement and recognition.

Nancy Julia – Coach of the Year (Lifetime Achievement)

Nancy Julia of Area 26 has dedicated nearly 40 years to Special Olympics Virginia, starting as a basketball coach in 1985. She expanded her coaching to include soccer, track, and alpine skiing. Nancy's legacy is defined by the confidence, camaraderie, and lasting memories she's built among countless athletes and fellow coaches.

The Thorpe Family (Area 23) – Family of the Year

For the Thorpe family of Area 23, Special Olympics is a true family commitment. Athlete Michael is supported by his mother Heidi, who diligently manages the athletes' medical paperwork and promotes Special Olympics locally. Father Mike and sister Eva actively coach various sports. Their advocacy extends beyond athletics, notably through community theater and arts programs focused on inclusion.

Joanne Catron – Winning Spirit Award

Joanne Catron, deeply involved with Area 15, has contributed passionately to Special Olympics since the 1980s. Known both as an energetic coach and as the official costume designer for her area, Joanne's creativity and leadership have significantly enriched her community.

Stephen Hayes (CBS 6) – GameChanger Media Award

Stephen Hayes, General Manager at CBS 6, and his team have been instrumental in promoting Special Olympics Virginia through thoughtful storytelling and community outreach. Stephen regularly participates directly in events, emphasizing his commitment by choosing to sit with athletes in the stands rather than opting for VIP treatment.

Congratulations to all our extraordinary 2024 award winners! Your contributions truly make Special Olympics Virginia exceptional.
