Rusty Graham: All Heart, All In

Area 23 athlete's love for the game and his teammates never stops.

If you’ve ever crossed paths with Russell “Rusty” Emmert Graham, chances are you walked away smiling. Whether it’s a warm hug, a fist bump, or a quick “how are you,” Rusty makes everyone feel like a friend.

“He’s friendly with everyone. There’s no stranger to Rusty,” says his coach.

A proud athlete from Area 23, Rusty has been part of Special Olympics Virginia for more than 20 years—and he’s just getting started. Over the years, he’s competed in nearly every sport you can name: track and field, bowling, soccer, basketball, floor hockey, swimming, and powerlifting. His journey is powered by talent, enthusiasm, and a love for being active.

Or as Rusty proudly puts it: “I’m never tired. I’m smoking hot!”

These days, his focus is on track and bowling—two sports where his dedication, sportsmanship, and joy shine the brightest. Whether he’s racing down the track or cheering from the sidelines, Rusty’s love for the game and his teammates never takes a break.

Rusty has Down syndrome, but that’s just one part of who he is. What stands out most is his energy, positivity, and drive. He may not always take first place, but he’s known for showing up, giving his best, and bringing heart to every event.

“We find it very rewarding in all the different sports,” says his father, Jack Graham. “Plus, all the coaches have been just fantastic over the years. It’s been the greatest involvement he could ever have.”

For Rusty, Special Olympics is more than a series of games. It’s a place where effort is celebrated, friendships flourish, and everyone is seen for who they are.

“So great—I love it here,” says Rusty.
