Rhapsody Cain’s journey with Special Olympics Virginia has been about far more than sports. It has been a journey of confidence, connection, and self-discovery. A fourth grade student and Special Olympics Virginia athlete, Rhapsody has spent the past two years competing and growing both on and off the court through programs across Virginia. Diagnosed with autism and ADHD, she once struggled with communication and often felt shy in unfamiliar environments. Today, she walks into practices with excitement, eager to compete, learn, and build friendships with the people around her.

Her mother, Towanda Robinson, remembers how overwhelming social situations once felt for Rhapsody. But everything began to change when they found Special Olympics Virginia. What first stood out to Robinson was not just the sports, but the warmth of the community.

“All they said was, ‘Just try your best. You don’t have to be perfect,’” Robinson recalled. “That meant everything to us.”

With encouragement from coaches, volunteers, and teammates, Rhapsody slowly began to come out of her shell. Robinson remembers her daughter returning home from practices smiling and saying, “Mommy, these people are really nice. I want to go back and see them again. I’ve made friends.”

For Rhapsody, sports became more than activities. They became opportunities to build confidence and discover new strengths. At first, tennis felt intimidating. Hitting the ball over the net made her feel “shy” and “nervous,” but the steady encouragement from her coaches reminded her she was capable.

“Coach Lunsford tells me, ‘You got this,’” Rhapsody said proudly.

Currently, Rhapsody is focused on tennis through Special Olympics Virginia. Throughout the year, she also participates in basketball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, softball, hockey, ice skating, and golf. Rather than shying away from new experiences, Rhapsody embraces every opportunity to try a new sport with determination and joy.

“You can do anything if you try your best,” she said confidently.

Her mother says Special Olympics has transformed Rhapsody’s confidence, independence, and social skills. She now proudly talks about competitions, friendships, and winning medals.

“I feel like I’m a superstar,” Rhapsody said confidently.

And Rhapsody truly shines. With a contagious smile and joyful spirit, she leaves a lasting impression on everyone she meets. As her mother says, “Her smile can light up the room. Just have a conversation with her, and she’ll leave you smiling by the end of it.
