Meet Coach William Sutton of Area 31 Celtics

In his first year as a coach for Special Olympics, William Sutton has already made a HUGE impact.

Nearly a year ago, long-time friend and Area 31 Area Coordinator Terry Mayfield simply asked William if he would be interested in getting involved as a basketball coach.

"I have a passion for working with individuals of all abilities. So, that simple ask resulted in a 'yes'."

William wasn't new to working with the disability community. He's worked alongside and with individuals with disabilities for the better part of the last 15 years.

"I have a special place in my heart for individuals that just want to compete. Regardless of their abilities, if they want to compete, I'm their guy."

This past weekend, he led the Area 31 Celtics to a silver medal in the first Basketball Championships.

Since the end of the pandemic, Special Olympics Virginia has had a real need for coaches. The number of coaches has shrunk and that has impacted the number of athletes able to compete as well.

“If you’re interested in making a difference in the life of another human being, this is the place for you to do that.”
