Special Olympics Swimming

Know Your Facts

  • There will be 225 athletes competing in swimming
  • There are 60 coaches

We have 2 competitions: competitions range from 25 yards to 800 yards; these are individual competitions. In addition, there are the eight competitions in Swimming Skills; these range from assisted, unassisted, walk and kickboard events.

Check out the different volunteer roles we offer:

Timers

Run either the plungers or dolphins for the swimmers in the lane assigned to you, provide encouragement and positive reinforcement to athletes during competition, work with all officials per their instruction and then when your heat of athletes has completed get ready for the next division of competitors to begin.

Clerk Escorts

Escort athletes from various areas on the pool deck: From the clerking table to the staging area, from the staging area to the start line for the event they are swimming in and then dropping them off at awards staging when necessary. Then, an awards escort will pick them up and you will head back to the clerk table for another athlete assignment.

Awards Escort

After an athlete is brought to awards staging by a clerk escort, you will stay with the athlete/group as they move through the awards staging area and receive their medal. Help to make sure everyone stays in their assigned position and is picked up by a coach after the awards presentation.

Swimming Skills

Serve as either an escort or timer in the swimming skills area. Escorts will assist athlete in transitioning from each event and assist them in getting their medal. Timers will assist in the timing and recording of all swimming skill events.

Security

Assist in making sure only people with the proper credentials (athletes and coaches) are allowed int he pool deck. All family, friends and spectators must watch from the seating areas.

Awards Presenter

As an athlete is announced, place the proper medal around their neck/hand it to them on the podium. Also assist in laying out the proper awards for each upcoming group.

Staging

Help to oversee athletes once they arrive in the staging area and making sure they are placed in the correct order.

Table Assistants

Take paperwork to and from specific locations within the facility.

Awards Announcer

Announce athletes as they receive their award at the podium. A script will be provided.
