Carol Rivers: Passion Knows No Age

At 73, Carol is making waves—swimming, volunteering, and inspiring with heart and energy in everything she does.

At 73 years old, Carol Rivers proudly holds the title of “oldest in the room” in Area 26, and she wears this honor like a gold medal.

“Age doesn’t bother me at all. I like it. I like it a lot,” she says. “It’s just a number.”

Born in 1954 and raised with an unstoppable spirit, Carol is living proof that passion, purpose and positivity can keep you young at heart.

Because of complications with the umbilical cord during birth, Carol was born with a learning disability — but she’s never let that define her. Instead, she has built a life full of movement, connection and joy — especially through her two greatest passions: swimming and volunteering.

"I have so much energy! I still haven't figured that out, but like I said to myself, why figure that out?! You have it, and it’s a good thing!”

Carol began her journey with Special Olympics Virginia in 2011 and ever since, she has been all in. Every Sunday, you’ll find her at the Oakmont Rec Center, diving into swim practice with the same excitement she had on day one. And she doesn’t stop there. She also volunteers her time, helps wherever she’s needed and mentors younger athletes with her unique mix of encouragement and experience.

Independent and full of drive, Carol gets herself to practice, gives rides to others, shares swim tips with neighbors, and never misses a chance to make someone feel welcome. Her involvement with Special Olympics Virginia has given her more than a place to compete — it has given her a true sense of community.

I would be lonely without this, without Special Olympics, without volunteering — I know just about everybody.
