Around Special Olympics Virginia, he's known simply as "The People’s Champ"—and once you've seen Jesus Godinez at a competition, you'll understand why.
For 18 years, Jesus has proudly represented Special Olympics Virginia as a dedicated athlete in swimming, golf, basketball, and flag football. Whether he's hitting fairways or diving into the pool, Jesus is always eager to compete—but more than that, he’s eager to support his fellow athletes.
His coach says it best:
“Jesus always has that drive to 'Let me win!' But even more importantly, he has the compassion not to dwell on his own successes. Instead, he’s the first to celebrate others, no matter where they finish.”
You'll always see Jesus with his arm around a teammate or competitor, poolside or on the golf course, cheering them on. His kindness and genuine enthusiasm bring athletes together, making him unforgettable to everyone he meets across Virginia and beyond.
As his coach puts it, “You won’t find a more respectful and well-mannered person. Jesus carries himself with dignity and kindness and deserves every recognition that comes his way.”
For his sportsmanship, leadership, and friendship, Special Olympics Virginia is proud to honor Jesus Godinez as the 2025 Athlete of the Year.
