Summer Series Ends with a Splash in RVA

Athletes swam for gold at Saturday’s regional swimming competition at the Chickahominy Aquatics Association in Richmond.

The rain held off, the humidity held on, and we’re certain everyone was smiling under their masks as athletes swam for gold at Saturday’s regional swimming competition at the Chickahominy Aquatics Association in Richmond.

In total, 92 swimmers from 10 Areas (3, 6, 11, 14, 15, 16, 22, 24, 29 and 26) competed, including Zachary Brown from Hopewell, Jennifer Lin from Williamsburg, Carl Alf from Springfield and Crystal Gibson from Earlysville, all who’ll be swimming on the national stage next June at Special Olympics USA Games. The event marked the end of our “Summer Series,” which featured 5 one-day, regional competitions in several sports throughout the summer as athletes moved back to in-person training and competition.

We are grateful to the 41 volunteers and 33 coaches for their support of the event, and all the precautions necessary to make it a safe space for everyone. Special thanks, also, to the SwimRVA competition team for their time; to Sheetz for providing food for the athletes after competition; to Chick-Fil-A for donating to our team packets; and to our corporate volunteers from Enterprise, the Virginia State Police and Genworth.

As this season comes to a close, we’re already looking ahead to fall training opportunities and our first state-level competition, Fall Championships, in more than a year. Stay tuned for more details to include volunteer opportunities, athlete registration information and event details. SOVA is back in the game!
