Athletes Return to the Playing Field

For the first time since 2019, Special Olympics Virginia hosted an in-person state-wide competition.

This past Sunday was special for one reason, it was the return of Fall Championships at Virginia Beach! 450+ athletes in 6 sports competed throughout the weekend for a chance at gold. While Saturday's conditions were less than ideal for outdoor competitors, the rained held off on Sunday and there were no delays or cancellations.

The celebration really began on Saturday night when Joe Baron from the Nolfolk Sherrif Department, lit the torch to kick off Opening Ceremony. Missed Opening Ceremony or want to relive it? Check out the Live Stream from the event:

This past weekend marked not only the first event since the 2019 Basketball Championships, it also marked the debut of competition at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The state of the art facilities hosted bocce and volleyball competition.

Besides our athletes, the real champion of the weekend was our friends at Knights of Columbus. Not only did they volunteer their time all weekend long, they made a charitable contribution that paid for each and every Special Olympics Virginia athlete to compete. We're so thankful for their support and such an amazing weekend.
