Please follow the instructions below to complete your Class A certification process. Please note these items must be renewed every three years.

Class A Process Overview

Class A Certification
Be sure to complete all steps to become a Class A volunteer.

Step 1 - Class A Form - *NOW ONLINE!

Fill out your Class A Adult or Minor form. We receive your form the moment you click submit - so no need to email or mail.

*UPDATE: The communicable diseases waiver is now simplified and included in the waiver portion of the Class A form.

Step 2 - Run Your Background Check

Visit Sterling Volunteers to get started. After you register, be sure to enter the Good Deed code (un9a213), which verifies that your background check is being completed for Special Olympics Virginia.

Step 3 - Complete Protective Behaviors

Visit the Special Olympics Learning Portal to complete Protective Behaviors training. Need login assistance? Check out our help guide.

If you are volunteering as a chaperone, Unified Partner, or council member - YOU'RE ALL SET after this step! If you are coaching, continue to Step 4.

Step 4 - Coaches Trainings (only required for coaches)

Calling all coaches! If you'd like to volunteer as a coach, you'll need to complete Concussion Awareness training and General Orientation. Complete Concussion Training in the Learning Portal and complete General Orientation here.

Did you know?

All Class A volunteers are mandated reporters. Individuals 18 years and older who are associated with, employed or volunteer with a private sports organization or team are required to report suspected abuse and neglect as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours after having a suspicion of a reportable offense.
