Young Athletes Curriculum

Week Eight, Lesson One

LESSON OVERVIEW

Opening Sports Song with Leapin' Lizards (3 min) – Get ready to move! Sing along and do the motions that accompany the song with Leapin' Lizard motions.

Running Styles (4 min) – Practice running/walking styles such as slow, fast, backwards, high knees and on tiptoes.

Run and Carry (5 min) – Set up floor markers around the room, then show each child a marker to stand on. Give a bean bag to the child at the first marker. “Now let’s play a running game.”

Jumping High (5 min) - Introduce the skill of jumping over equipment to the athletes. Start jumping over a floor spot and then jump over a cone.

Hurdles (5 min) – Set up the cones as hurdles. The athlete walks/runs and jumps over the hurdles.

Throwing for Distance and Accuracy (5 min) - For distance, place a floor marker some distance away. The child throws the bean bag with one hand and tries to throw further than the floor marker. For accuracy, place a cone at a distances. The athlete throws the bean bag with one hand and tries to hit the cone.

Closing Sports Song (3 min) – You did it! Sing along and do the motions that accompany the song.
