Corporal John Tarter of the Virginia Tech Police Department has been a dedicated supporter of Special Olympics Virginia and the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) since 2009. Introduced to the movement by a coworker, he quickly became involved and has proudly served as his department’s Special Olympics representative—an honor he values deeply.
Over the years, Corporal Tarter has found inspiration in the athletes and the moments that bring the community together. One of his favorite memories comes from cheering on athletes at regional basketball tournaments at Cassell Coliseum, where one athlete’s enthusiastic “woo!” after every made shot captured the pure joy and energy that make Special Olympics so special.
Through his continued involvement, Corporal Tarter remains committed to supporting athletes and celebrating the spirit of inclusion that defines Special Olympics Virginia.
