FAQ

Who needs to complete the Athlete Registration Form?
Every individual with an intellectual disability participating as an athlete needs to complete or update the Athlete Registration form annually.

Who can complete the form?
An athlete age 18 or older with the capacity to sign legal documents may complete their own form or a parent/guardian with the capacity to sign legal documents on behalf of the athlete must complete the form.

How do I access the Athlete Registration Portal?
You will receive an email from athletes@specialolympicsva.org inviting you to access the portal and create an account. Each account is tied to a unique username, but you may use the same email for multiple accounts if necessary.

What if I am the parent/guardian of more than one athlete and I use the same email address for one or more athletes?
You will need a unique username for each participant, however, you can use the same email address for all. The username must look like an email address but you may add things to that username that will make it unique for each athlete. Example: john@gmail.com.dave for the first athlete and john@gmail.com.steve for the second. When an email already associated with an existing user is entered, it will prompt the user to create a unique username where they can then enter something like the above.
Best practice would be to securely keep a list of your user names if you are registering or updating more than one athlete.

How do I know when an athlete needs to update their Athlete Registration Form?
The athlete and parent/guardian on file will receive an email notifying them that the athlete’s form will expire in 30 days. Athletes and their families should register during this period.

What is the advantage of using this portal to register an athlete?
Once you've registered in the new portal, all of the information from that form will pre-populate when you renew next time! Also, you can login and update information, anytime!

What if the athlete’s contact information or medical information changes before the annual renewal date?
You can access the Athlete Registration Form at any time to make necessary updates. The athlete’s eligibility date will be recalculated to be one year from the date of any submitted updates.

Will paper registration forms still be accepted?
We strongly discourage any paper or PDF versions of the athlete form. Anyone who submits a PDF or hard copy form will be asked to register through the portal to ensure that Area Leadership volunteers have access to athlete registration forms.
