Steve Knick

Assistant Chief Steve

Assistant Chief Steve Knick of the Charlottesville Police Department has been a dedicated supporter of Special Olympics Virginia and the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) throughout his entire law enforcement career. Early in his career, he was asked to help with a Tip-A-Cop event at Red Lobster—an experience that quickly sparked a lasting passion, fueled by the camaraderie of fellow officers and the meaningful connections he formed with athletes.

Over the years, Assistant Chief Knick has remained deeply involved, including serving on the LETR Executive Council for the past 12 years. His passion for the movement is reflected in the traditions he’s helped grow—most notably at Summer Games swimming events, where he and fellow officers let athletes push them into the pool while in full uniform. What began as a single moment has evolved into a highly anticipated tradition, bringing laughter, excitement, and unforgettable joy to athletes and officers alike.

Through his leadership and long-standing commitment, Assistant Chief Knick continues to champion inclusion and create meaningful experiences that embody the spirit of Special Olympics Virginia.
