Barbara heads to Minnesota this June to coach Virginia’s flag football team. She has been involved with the Special Olympics for more than 20 years, coaching flag football, basketball, volleyball, and powerlifting. Through her involvement, she has learned patience and gained a deep appreciation for how strong and confident her athletes are, especially enjoying the joy on their faces as they succeed. Outside of Special Olympics, Barbara enjoys diamond art, crocheting, and spending time with her two Labradors and pit mix dogs. She draws inspiration from her mother, daughter, sister, and best friend — all strong, wise, and supportive influences in her life. Having played women’s rugby into her late 50s, she loves being part of sports that challenge and unite people. Being selected to coach in Minnesota is a dream come true, and she is thrilled to witness athletes from across the country coming together.
