Signature Aviation is dedicated to providing consistent and exceptional service, much like the Youngs who consistently go above and beyond to support Special Olympics Virginia. Learn more about the Youngs’ story in this Signature Volunteer Spotlight presented by Signature Aviation.
For the Young family, involvement in the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) and Special Olympics Virginia (SOVA) is more than just a commitment—it's a tradition that spans generations. Scott Young, a dedicated member of the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office, began his journey with LETR nearly three decades ago. It was his captain, Chuck Hart, who first introduced him to the Torch Run in 1998. What started as a simple invitation soon became a lifelong passion. Scott’s involvement grew rapidly as he participated in various events, from motorcycle rides and train pulls to golf tournaments and international conferences. His dedication even led him to the international final leg of the Torch Run in Abu Dhabi, a testament to his unwavering commitment to the cause.
Scott’s enthusiasm was infectious, and it wasn’t long before his family caught the LETR and SOVA spirit. "My family became involved because if I was doing it, they were going to be with me. After they met the athletes, they were in it for life," Scott shared. This deep connection to the athletes and the mission of SOVA has kept the Young family engaged for nearly three decades.
Bryan Young, Scott’s son, followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming involved in LETR in 2004. What started as accompanying his dad to events and Summer Games quickly evolved into a passion of his own. “After my first event, I got hooked,” Bryan said. “I always wanted to return the next year and couldn’t wait for the next event where I could help and volunteer.” When Scott retired, Bryan stepped up, taking on the role of LETR representative for the Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office. He’s since involved his own family, including his wife, who now helps brainstorm new fundraising ideas, and his young daughter, who attended her first Polar Plunge at just nine months old.

The Young family’s involvement in LETR and SOVA isn’t just about participation—it’s about making a difference. Bryan and Scott have both been deeply involved in a wide array of events, including motorcycle rides, golf tournaments, tip-a-cops, and cover-the-cruiser fundraisers. They also regularly attend state events like Summer Games, the Torch Run, and Polar Plunge.
Now, both Scott and Bryan are excited about the upcoming Southwest Virginia Plane Pull sponsored by Signature Aviation, a new event that offers a unique challenge and an opportunity to showcase their region’s commitment to Special Olympics. “I’m hoping we have a chance to show that our region can host a big event,” Scott shared, echoing his son’s sentiments.
For the Young family, the joy they’ve found in supporting Special Olympics Virginia and the Law Enforcement Torch Run is immeasurable. It’s a joy that has been passed down from Scott to Bryan, and now to Bryan’s daughter, creating a lasting legacy of dedication and compassion. As Bryan aptly put it, “Special Olympics has given me more joy than I could ever express.” The Young family’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one family’s commitment can have on a community and on the lives of countless athletes.
