Special Olympics Virginia holds five state-level competitions, 2,400 local and regional competitions and nearly 50 special events and fund raisers annually. The public is welcome to attend any of our events.



Special Olympics Virginia Competition Calendar 2008
  • Summer Games

    June 6-8, 2008

    The annual Summer Games are the cornerstone of the Special Olympics Virginia (SOVA) program and the largest state competition held each year. The excitement begins on Friday evening with the VIP Olympic Celebration Picnic, the Law Enforcement Torch Run final leg and Opening Ceremony at the University of Richmond Robin’s Center. Competition begins on Saturday morning when more than 1,400 athletes with intellectual disabilities from all over Virginia go for the gold in bowling, power lifting, softball, swimming, tennis, and track & field. In addition to the competition, the Summer Games offers an Olympic Festival that includes games, food, music and a Health & Wellness Expo. Sponsorships and volunteer opportunities are available at numerous levels. All events are free and open to the general public.
  • Winter Championships

    Jan. 18-19, 2008

    With temperatures quickly dropping, it's almost time for the Special Olympics Virginia Winter Championships. More than 400 Special Olympics Virginia athletes will compete in the 2008 Winter Championships, set for Jan. 18-19 in Northern Virginia. Two-person team bowling is on the competition schedule, in addition to figure skating, speed skating and gymnastics.
  • Alpine Championships

    Jan. 28-29, 2008

    It's time to get those skis ready! More than 125 Special Olympics Virginia athletes will go for the gold in slalom and giant slalom downhill events at the 2008 Special Olympics Virginia Alpine Skiing Championships, taking place Jan. 28-29 at Wintergreen Resort. Time trials will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 28 on selected slopes, with dinner, the Opening Ceremonies and Dance to to follow that evening. The skiing competitions for beginner, intermediate and advanced ability levels get started at 9 a.m. Jan. 29 on various slopes.
  • Basketball Championships

    March 14-15, 2008

    More than 700 Special Olympics athletes will take to the basketball courts in Stafford during "March Madness!"
