Athlete of the Month

 

Waynesboro's Holmes named September 2003 Athlete of the Month

Name: Michael Holmes

Age: 27 years old

Hometown: Waynesboro, Virginia

Number of yrs in Special Olympics: 20 yrs.

Sports: Michael is a member of the Soccer Skills, Basketball Half-Court, Softball Skills and Adult Bowling teams. He is also a member of the local Special Olympics Choir that has performed at local and section competitions, local churches and the Area’s big two day Fall Fest Fundraiser! In the past he has also participated in Roller-skating.

 

 

Major Accomplishments: It took Michael 3 years before he would walk on rollerskates on his own, but he never gave up—as terrifying as it was to him. Michael worked hard each year to earn a participation trophy! The entire team was so proud of his courage and determination!

Competitions: Michael has attended numerous competitions throughout his Special Olympics career, including many Summer Games in Richmond and Fall Games in Virginia Beach.

Hobbies & Interests: In addition to Special Olympics, Michael loves going to the races. He is an avid Jeff Gordon fan. He loves to sing along with Garth Brooks and all the country music artists on his karaoke machine!

Education Status: Michael is a 1996 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School. He continues to live at home with his parents while participating in the local ARC and CSB day programs.

What has SOVA given you? Special Olympics has given Michael the opportunity to travel all over the state. It has given him a wonderful social life. It continually challenges him and helps him to continue to grow.
