Torch Runner Major Hutton Begins His Run Across Virginia Once Again
Day 7 (June 10, 2005) I was beginning to think the end would never be in sight. My final leg began at 8:00 a.m. in Hopewell. I teamed up with officers from Hopewell, Riverside Regional Jail, and a few state troopers as we began our trek to the Chesterfield County line. As I have stated before, turnout was down this year and today was no exception. We quickly began to feel the heat of the day as the humidity began to rise rapidly. We crossed the bridge into Colonial Heights and were met by the new "mounted sheriff's patrol." Sheriff Tench and one of his deputies were on horseback as we passed through the town. Several Special Olympics participants met us at City Hall, giving us much needed water as we passed by with the torch lit and held high. It was then on to Chesterfield as we met the Police Department, Sheriff's Office and a few dedicated DOC employees. full story here |

DULLES DAY FAMILY FESTIVAL RAISED 90,000 FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS VIRGINIA
A huge THANK YOU to all who braved the weather and joined us at the 2004 Dulles Day Festival and Plane Pull on September 18th! We appreciate the perseverance of all the teams, sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers and attendees who helped make the 12th annual event a success, and we hope you had a great time. (for full story click here)
Although the early rain and unrelenting wind added to the challenge the teams faced in pulling a 150,000 pound airplane, it certainly didn't dampen the spirits of those who participated. Thousands came out to cheer on the more than 40 teams who played tug-of-war with the FedEx jet, and the fun didn't end there. Attendees enjoyed browsing through the exhibit booths of sponsors and various vendors, and the kids had fun with rides and games in the Kid's Zone. A special thanks to the folks at Amusement Rentals by J&J for the last minute adjustment, heading back to the shop during event set-up to switch the inflatable slides and moonbounces for fun rides that wouldn't blow away!
The Plane Pull competition was fierce, and enthusiastic! And, the winners are...

MARCH SERVES AS MENTAL RETARDATION MONTH
March is Mental Retardation Awareness
Month. Unaware to many, there are approximately 170 million people
with intellectual disabilities worldwide, and more than 7 million
in the United States, many in our own community.
Through Special
Olympics, we serve more than 1 million athletes with intellectual
disabilities in more than 150 countries providing year-round sports
training and competition in 26 Olympics –type summer and winter
sports. We see the abilities not the limitations - of people with
intellectual disabilities. We’ve witnessed the true Olympics courage,
spirit and joy of our athletes.
By participating in Special Olympics
people with intellectual disabilities have gained self-confidence,
self-esteem and social skills to succeed both on and off the playing
field. Our athletes are performing as coaches, referees, reporters,
photographers, board members and spokespersons. Across the world,
stigmas are being shattered, people with intellectual disabilities
are successfully relocating from institutions into communities and
individuals once thought burdens to society are proving themselves
productive citizens.
During Mental Retardation Awareness Month,
let’s take this time to thank all our athletes, family members,
volunteers and sponsors for Inspiring Greatness
and supporting a movement that celebrates differences and embraces
acceptance and understanding.
