Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Special Olympics Virginia. By giving your time, you make it possible for more than 10,000 athletes in Virginia to participate in Special Olympics.

Take our online General Volunteer Orientation and quiz. This is the first step of becoming a better informed volunteer and one of several requirements necessary to become a Special Olympics certified coach.

Volunteer Eligibility Policy

This excerpt from Special Olympic Virginia’s Policy Manual outlines our volunteer eligibility requirements. Our minimum age requirement for volunteers depends on the nature of the volunteer's responsibilities. Generally, volunteers must be at least 14 years old to volunteer by themselves, or 8 years old to volunteer with a parent, guardian or chaperone.

Protective Behaviors Training
This required training gives Class A volunteers guidance on how to treat athletes respectfully and how to identify potential signs of abuse.

Class A Adult (18+) Volunteer Application
This form must be completed by adults volunteering as coaches, assistant coaches, Area Council members, Global Messenger mentors, drivers, chaperones for overnight events and unified partners. Note: For security reasons, we recommend including only the first five digits in your Social Security Number, and then calling with the last four. Calls should be directed to Gray Miller, Director of Volunteer Services, at 804.612.1608.

Class A Minor (Under 18) Volunteer Application
This form must be completed by minors volunteering as assistant coaches, unified partners or Area Council members and must be signed by the minor and his/her parent or guardian. The second portion of this form must be completed by two non-family references.

Event Volunteer (Class B) Release Form
This form must be completed by volunteers who are helping at a one-day event. If the volunteer is a minor, the form must be signed by the minor and his/her parent or guardian.

Volunteer Code of Conduct
This document outlines Special Olympics Virginia’s behavioral expectations of all volunteers.

Area Council Job Descriptions
Special Olympics Virginia’s 28 area programs are run by volunteer Area Coordinators and councils. The Area Councils are the governing body of these programs. Visit our Area Council section for more information on these positions.
