Motor Activities Training Program (MATP)
No athlete, regardless of ability level, should ever be excluded from Special Olympics.
The Motor Activities Training Program is designed for athletes with severe or profound intellectual disabilities who are unable to participate in official Special Olympics sport competitions because of their skill and/or functional abilities.
This unique sport-based program emphasizes training and participation rather than competition. The program provides training for athletes in skills that are related to, and may lead to, participation in traditional Special Olympics events. It also provides people with severe limitations the opportunity to participate in appropriate recreational activities geared to their ability levels. Individuals who participate in the Motor Activities Training Program activities work as hard as other Special Olympics athletes and are recognized for their efforts.
To enroll an athlete in the Motor Activities Training Program, contact your Region Director for information about the opportunities in your area. If you are unsure about how to contact your Region Director, view our
