Special Olympics Seeking Annual Awards Nominations

Winners to be Honored in Spring 2013
8/16/2012

Each year, Special Olympics Virginia honors those individuals, volunteers and families whose exemplary support, efforts and embodiment of the spirit of Special Olympics make a significant impact on our program through the Special Olympics Virginia Annual Awards program, presented by Virginia Farm Bureau.

The five awards for 2012 are:

  • Athlete of the Year
  • Area Volunteer of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Family of the Year
  • Virginia H. Foster Winning Spirit Award

Each Area Coordinator should submit either a Coach of the Year or Volunteer of the Year recipient for their Area. The Virginia Farm Bureau will recognize one volunteer (coach or volunteer) per Area as the Virginia Farm Bureau Area Volunteer of the Year. These individuals will receive a plaque and be recognized by the local Virginia Farm Bureau representative.

The winners of the Area Volunteer of the Year then will be evaluated by an awards committee, and one coach and one volunteer will be selected as the Special Olympics Volunteer and Coach of the Year for 2011. These winners, along with the Athlete of the Year, the Family of the Year and the Virginia H. Foster Winning Spirit recipient, will be recognized at a ceremony in spring 2012.

Areas that submit at least one coach or volunteer award nomination will receive scholarships for athletes to attend the 2013 Summer Games. Those area programs that do not submit an application may forfeit their scholarships to other areas in their region. In the event that an area does not submit a candidate for these awards, Special Olympics Virginia reserves the right to submit a candidate for that area.

All nominations are due by Nov. 16. Please help us recognize our deserving athletes and volunteers.
