Local Areas

Special Olympics Virginia is geographically divided into 29 area programs, which are organized into seven regions. Each region has an office. The Richmond office serves as our corporate headquarters and it houses the majority of our staff, as well as the James River Region Director and the Urban Programs Director. A Region Director works with local volunteers to facilitate the Special Olympics program within each region. The area programs are run by volunteer Area Coordinators and committees.

Area programs provide the first competitive experience for our athletes. Athletes who compete at the area level then have the opportunity to advance to regional competitions. All seven regions, as well as Urban Programs, host regional competitions throughout the year, which serve as qualifying events for our six state-level competitions.
