Bocce is a game of skill and strategy. The objective is for one team to get as many of their boccia balls closer to the pallina (the smallest ball) than the opposing team. There are anywhere from two to four to eight players on a team. Each player is given two balls and must take turns rolling (lagging) the ball toward the pallina ball, which has already been thrown onto the field. The players are given points for the balls rolled closest to the pallina ball. Players also may throw at the pallina ball to move the target away from previously thrown boccia balls. Balls, including the pallina, can be displaced by the balls of other players.

The Special Olympics Virginia bocce program has events for singles and doubles competition. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are placed in divisions according to ability.
