Basketball is a favorite sport among Special Olympics Virginia athletes. In addition to team competition, Special Olympics basketball offers individual skills competition, allowing athletes to train and compete in basic basketball skills. Athletes must develop these key skills prior to advancing to team play. Events include target pass, 10-meter dribble and spot shot. A player's final score is a total of their scores for each of these events.

As in all Special Olympics sports, basketball teams are grouped in competition divisions according to the athletes' and team's ability level.

Events:
  • 5-on-5 Unified Sports® Team Competition
  • 5-on-5 Team Competition
  • Half Court: 3-on-3 Competition
  • Individual Skills
