Special Olympics Skiing Championships
January 23 - 24 at Wintergreen Resort
More than 100 Virginia athletes with intellectual disabilities will go for the gold in slalom and giant slalom downhill events at the 2006 Special Olympics Virginia Alpine Skiing Championships, taking place on January 23rd – 24th at Wintergreen Resort.
Wintergreen Resort has hosted these Skiing Championships since 1978. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Monday, January 23 at 1 p.m. in the courtyard at the top of the mountain. Time trials will follow from 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. on selected slopes, with dinner and a dance to take place later that evening in Wintergreen’s ballroom.
Skiing competition for beginner, intermediate and advanced ability levels is from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24 on various slopes, with medals to be awarded in the courtyard throughout the day. The Special Olympics cauldron will be extinguished at 2 p.m. during the Closing Ceremony in the courtyard. The public and media representatives are encouraged to attend all events free of charge.
