3,433 Plungers Raise A Record $590,000
For Special Olympics Virginia At 14th Annual Polar Plunge

Virginia Beach, Va. - Congratulations, plungers, volunteers and sponsors! 3,433 plungers raised $590,000 for Special Olympics Virginia at the 14th Annual Polar Plunge Winter Festival on Saturday, February 4th, 2006 at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

Highlights of the event included an appearance by Globetrotter Curly Neal.

Since 1993 more than $2.5 million has been raised for Special Olympics Virginia, with over 17,500 people taking the plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. Special Olympics Virginia today announced that currently $590,000 has been raised from the 2006 Plunge, but the amount could increases as additional pledges are turned in.

The Polar Plunge, which was presented by Cox Communications and The Fox 106.9 FM, benefited Special Olympics Virginia, the state program of Special Olympics Incorporated, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities at no costs to the athletes or their families.
